Long ago, the old people knew Muruwari

(1900-1972) Between 1968 and 1972, Jimmie Barker worked with to record over 113 hours of the Muruwari language, cultural practices and recollections of his life. In his biography, The two worlds of Jimmie Barker, Jimmie says,

“When I realised how little was known of the Muruwari language I felt I should record as much as I remember. I have enjoyed recording my memories of my own life and the Muruwari.”

ROBERT BARKER-SALT

Born in Brewarrina, Robert started to learn and speak Muruwari when he was 12 years old. He learnt from the audio cassette tapes from his Great Grandfather Jimmy Barker.
Robert is very passionate about Aboriginal languages and strives to strengthen our languages spoken. In addition to Muruwarri, Robert is also learning Wiradjuri.
Robert has a weekly language segment on Dubbo and the regions only Aboriginal radio program First Nations Yarn Up, where he regularly shares Muruwarri language.

I have been learning Muruwari language since I was young. Growing up with both parents who are Muruwari, they helped me connect to culture and keep Language strong through me.

They would use Murrwarri languge around the house and everyday living.

I am striving everyday to keep connected to culture, country, language.

Im very proud to be apart of this website to keep language strong for future generations.
